Updated April 2026 by Springs Local Guide | Everything you need to know before you visit
Garden of the Gods is the most visited attraction in Colorado Springs — and for good reason. Over 1,300 acres of stunning red rock formations set against the backdrop of Pikes Peak, completely free to enter, 365 days a year. But if you show up without a plan, you will waste time in traffic, fight for parking, and miss the best spots.
This guide covers everything: when to go, where to park, which trails to hike, and the insider tips that locals know but tourists never hear.
When to Visit (This Matters More Than You Think)
Best time of day: Sunrise. The light on the red rocks is spectacular, the park is nearly empty, and temperatures are comfortable even in summer. If sunrise is too early for you, arrive before 8 AM on weekdays.
Worst time: Saturday and Sunday between 10 AM and 3 PM. The parking lots fill up, the main roads back up, and the popular trails feel crowded.
Best months: September and October. The crowds thin out after Labor Day, the weather is perfect, and the light is golden.
Avoid: Spring Break week and July 4th weekend. The park can see 10,000+ visitors per day during peak times.
Where to Park (Locals Know This)
Skip the main Visitor Center lot. It fills up by 9 AM on busy days and the traffic to get there is the worst in the park.
Instead, use the South Parking Lot (also called Lot 4 or the Trading Post lot). It is easier to access from the south entrance, has more spaces, and puts you closer to the best rock formations. The Trading Post itself is a great place to buy souvenirs — better selection and fewer crowds than the Visitor Center gift shop.
Even better: Park at the Rock Ledge Ranch lot (just outside the south entrance) when the main lots are full. It is a short walk into the park and you avoid the internal traffic entirely.
Best Trails for Every Level
Easy: Perkins Central Garden Trail (1.5 miles)
A paved, wheelchair-accessible loop through the heart of the park. Passes right between the iconic North and South Gateway Rocks. This is the classic Garden of the Gods experience. Perfect for families, strollers, and anyone who wants the best views with minimal effort.
Moderate: Siamese Twins Trail (1 mile)
A short but rewarding hike to a unique rock formation with a natural window that perfectly frames Pikes Peak. This is the most photographed spot in the park and one of the most Instagrammed locations in Colorado. Arrive early for the best light and fewer people in your shot.
Challenging: Palmer Trail Loop (3.8 miles)
This trail runs along the western edge of the park with panoramic views of the rock formations from above. Moderate elevation gain, some rocky sections, and far fewer hikers than the main trails. This is where locals go to avoid the crowds while still enjoying the park.
Insider Tips
- Bike through the park instead of driving. The roads are scenic and bikeable, and you skip the parking nightmare entirely. Rent bikes in Manitou Springs (5 minutes away).
- Visit the Trading Post at the south end for better shopping and a quieter experience than the Visitor Center.
- Combine with Manitou Springs. Garden of the Gods is 5 minutes from Manitou Springs — grab lunch in Manitou after your morning at the park.
- Check the webcam before you go. The park has a live webcam that shows current parking conditions.
- Dogs are welcome on leash. Bring water — there are limited water fountains on trails.
